Inclusive youth triathlon event returns to Leeds for third year

  • Organisers are calling for more young people aged 6-18 to sign-up for this inclusive event
  • Taking place on 18th May at Leeds Beckett University, the event celebrates inclusion and joy in sports for children and young people of all abilities
  • The Yorkshire Ability Triathlon is a relaxed event based around swimming, cycling, and running for disabled children and young people.

The Yorkshire Ability Triathlon is returning to Leeds for its third year on 18th May and is looking for children of all abilities and ages to participate.

The event, which is run by volunteers, is open for children aged 6-18 with neurodivergent and physical disabilities. The annual event was launched in 2023 to show young people that sport and activity is for everybody.

Whether it’s swimming a short distance or completing full lengths, pedalling a specially adapted bike or cycling around the track, running a lap or getting pushed around in a chair, all entrants get a real triathlon experience and move at their own pace to the finish line.

Richard Mostyn-Jones, Chairman of Yorkshire & Humberside Committee of Triathlon England and Co-Founder, comments: “At the heart of the Yorkshire Ability Triathlon is a commitment to inclusivity and support. We’re looking for more young people aged six to eighteen, to sign up for this year’s event – as we want to make it the biggest yet!

“We recognise that every participant is unique, and we’re ready to go above and beyond to accommodate individual needs. From specialised equipment to personal assistance, we ensure that everyone feels valued and empowered to do their best on the day. Whether you require additional assistance in the water or a guide on the run, we're here to help you reach your full potential.”

Alternative activities will be available for those unable to take part in all three disciplines. There are no specific distances or times, it’s all about having fun and trying something new.

Danny Micklethwaite, marketing director at Arla Foods, and one of the sponsors of The Yorkshire Ability Triathlon, adds: “We are proud to be supporting this worthy event for a second year. At Arla, we are passionate about supporting active lifestyles and empowering individuals to achieve their personal best. We look forward to being part of this fantastic event and cheering on participants as they challenge themselves and celebrate their achievements. Together, let's make this year's Yorkshire Ability Triathlon a memorable and rewarding experience for everyone involved."

The Yorkshire Ability Triathlon will take place at Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus, who as a founding sponsor, have given exclusive access to their amazing sports facilities. Volunteers will also be ready to assist, while additional facilities like quiet rooms will be available for participants to step away from the event and decompress if needed.

Entries are £10 per person. To enter, sign up on their website: https://www.yorkshireabilitytriathlon.co.uk/enter
